Hi, I’m Shanti, owner of Happy Belly Health®, a functional medicine health coach practice specializing in weight loss and digestion.
Exploring Beyond Food “Religions”
There are so many eating “religions” out there—different diets and rules to follow. Sometimes, we get so caught up in the rules of these “religions” or diets that we forget to check in with our own bodies. What do we need or want at a particular meal or on a specific day?
Personally, I’ve tried it all—vegetarian, pescatarian, low-fat, low-calorie, Atkins, raw vegan (briefly), macrobiotic, low-carb, paleo—and I even made up a few of my own in college. The driver behind all these diet shifts? Weight loss. I was desperate to find the mecca for weight loss.
None of these attempts left me empty-handed, though. Each one taught me something valuable about what works for my body and what doesn’t.
My New Approach to Eating
These days, my “religion” is more about tuning into my own body, cravings, and trusting myself. I know what hurts my body and what nourishes it—and I also know that these needs can change.
My Challenge to You
I challenge you to set aside your food religion for a moment and really feel what your unique body needs more of. Is it vegetables, meat, fruit, fat, grains? Instead of jumping to a new diet, just try eating a little more of what’s missing from your diet.
For example, I recently realized I’d been missing whole grains, so I’ve re-fallen in love with steel-cut oats in the morning. I’ve also discovered that I don’t need as much meat as I once thought. I actually feel best when I’m light on animal protein during the week, and when I crave a ribeye, I go for it!

The yellow curry tofu on ginger cauliflower rice served over seasonal spring vegetables might be just what your body is craving. Or if you haven’t had fish in a while, the roasted lingcod with Meyer lemon sauce served with grilled yellow corn and sautéed summer squash sounds divine!
